In 1983, Wat Tummaprateip was founded by Venerable Wimol Silacjarn and legally registered as "Wat New Virginia.” As of 2025, the temple has moved a total of 4 times since its original establishment.

The construction of Wat Tummaprateip began towards the end of 1983 under the leadership of Mr. Narong Seenumeang, who rented a house on Columbia Pike Road in Arlington, VA. This house served as the temple’s first location, and it had two resident monks: Phra Sri Kunaporn and Phramaha Pramuan.

At the start of 1984, the two monks returned to Thailand. The temple was vacant for some time until His Holiness Phra Wimol Silacharn traveled from a temple in Atlanta, GA, to stay at "Wat New Virginia" as the only residing monk at the temple. Later, the name of the temple was changed to "Wat Tummaprateip". After the name change, another monk, Phramaha Mongkol Premsilo, from Wat Makutkasattriyaram, Bangkok, came to stay at the temple.

Midway into 1984, Mrs. Kamala Bupsiri became the chairwoman of the temple’s executive committee. When her term of office ended, Mr. Sak Rujireth took over as the temple's executive chairman and registered the temple under its new name.

Farmington Rd W, Accokeek, MD, USA

In 1999, the temple’s board members, monks, and followers from across the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area decided to move to a larger location under the leadership of Phrakru Sujinpurchase. The temple thus relocated to 36 Farmington Rd, W. Accokeek, MD 20607. This 28 acre plot of land came with a wide rectangular lawn and a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom house. The total cost of the property was $430,000 with a $117,500 down payment. The mortgage was paid off in December 2004.

After moving to this new location, the temple renovated the main floor, adding an office space and 3 more rooms for housing resident monks.

Between 2001-2002, Phramaha Soonthorn Warasapho requested permission to extend the building to serve as a place for merit-making. This extension provided more space, allowing for occupancy over 100 people and adding 2 more bathrooms. The temple also renovated the basement, creating a meeting room with a library, a dance and music classroom, and a storage room. The project had a budget of $200,000. To save on construction expenses, monks Phrakru Palad Sakda and Phramaha Prayut led the renovation, installing and building electricity lines, hot-cold water lines, and 14 wooden gazebos with help from other monks.

In 2003, Phramaha Soonthorn Warasapho became the Abbot and in 2004, Mrs. Suwatcharee Laiser became the executive chairwoman.

In 2016, Phra Phrom Vajiravimon (who then held the position of Phra Thep Pariyatiwimon) and Abbot Phrakhru Sophonthamwithet (who then held the position of Phra Maha Sunthorn Warasako) appointed Phrakru Wisutthivorawat (who then held the position of Phrakru Palad Sakda Chittahattho) and chairwoman Ms. Sayomporn Siwara (aka Edy Carlson) to coordinate the construction of the 100 Year “Yor Sor Sor” Pavilion on the temple’s grounds, a building which, by then, had been unfinished for many years due to lack of funding and resources. Prior to this point, the temple had applied for loans from several banks to help fund the construction, but all applications were denied due to the temple’s outstanding debts.

In 2017, Phrakru Wisutthivorawat, Ms. Sayomporn, and a group of volunteers organized several fundraising events to pay off the temple's outstanding debts, approximating nearly $2,000,000. The team fundraised without deducting any expenses, and all of the temple’s debts were paid off midway through 2019.

Ms. Sayomporn applied for a loan on the temple’s behalf and received the loan approval from a bank on her first application. For this success, the temple would like to thank Phrakru Sirithamwithet (Abbot of Wat Yarnna Rangsee) for recommending the bank and to thank Mrs. Saijai Nguyen for her assistance with the loan processing. On December 19, 2019, the loan contract was signed by Phrakru Wisutthivorawat and Ms. Sayomporn, as loan debtors, in the amount of $3,000,000.00.

In 2020, with funding from the bank loan signed by Phrakru Wisutthivorawat and Ms. Sayomporn, Wat Tummaprateip was finally able to continue the construction of the 100 Year “Yor Sor Sor” Pavilion. The building was completed in 2021, allowing the temple to better accommodate its increasingly large number of followers. With the construction complete, the team of volunteers led by Phrakru Wisutthivorawat and Ms. Sayomporn were able to help the temple and further their goal of seeing Wat Tummaprateip as a spiritual refuge for all followers of Buddhism.
